Chiropractic Facts:
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is based on the scientific law that the body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. The nervous system controls and coordinates this function in the body as well as the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body. While the brain is protected by the skull, the spinal cord is protected by 24 moving vertebrae. When these bones lose their normal position or become misaligned, they can choke off and irritate the spinal cord and surrounding nerves. This disrupts the function of the tissues or organs controlled by these nerves leading to dis-ease. We also know, that this causes unequal joint motion which leads to premature joint degeneration and breakdown. Chiropractic physicians locate these areas of spinal malfunction and correct them through chiropractic adjustments. Not only does chiropractic relieve pain, it also improves tissue function and promotes long term joint health. Our Orem, Utah chiropractic center is committed to get to the core of the problem.
How does chiropractic work?
Chiropractic works by restoring the body’s natural ability to be healthy. When under the proper control of your nervous system, all of the cells, tissues, and organs of the body are made to resist illness and disease. Chiropractic locates and removes interferences to your natural state of health.
The most common cause of interference to the nervous system is the 24 moving bones of the spine. A loss of normal motion or position of these bones can choke off, irritate, or impair the function of the nervous system and joints. This can disrupt the transmission of nerve impulses to and from the nervous system leading to dis-ease. Chiropractic is the number one profession to treat this. With improved spinal function there is often improved nervous system function and control. Your chiropractic physician can help remove interferences that may be disrupting a state of optimum health.
Chiropractors are often thought of as “back doctors” and have tremendous success treating back pain, neck pain, and headaches. However, since the primary focus chiropractic care is improved nervous system function, chiropractic can have a positive effect on many health conditions not typically thought of as “back problems”. Our Orem, Utah Chiropractic office specializes in being more than just a “back doctor”.
Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?
For most, the answer would be quite the opposite… most patients find it very “relieving” and “therapeutic.”
However, few patients (those who are especially tense) say it feels “tight” to be adjusted.
But, you can rest assured that in our Orem, Utah chiropractic center, your adjustment will always be gentle and safe!
What to expect after your first chiropractic adjustment?
- If you have never had an adjustment, or if it has been a while since your last adjustment, you may experience soreness or discomfort for a few hours to a few days after your visit. This is a normal reaction to chiropractic adjustments. The most common reason for this is “adrenal fatigue” for which nutritional supplementation for the adrenal glands may be needed. Also, your muscles may need to “re-learn” the proper positions of holding the restored joints, this may cause the muscles to become sore and achy after your chiropractic adjustment but only temporarily.
- If you are sore, use ice packs on the affected area. Ice therapy consists of the use of ice packs at 20-minute intervals followed by 2 hours of rest. This can be repeated as often as needed. Do not apply ice directly to bare skin. Always protect skin with a thin covering such as a shirt or light towel.
- Stay away from heavy lifting or repetitive movements until the chiropractor indicates you are ready for normal activities. Strenuous athletic activities such as running, lifting weights, impact aerobics, racquetball, tennis, skiing, bowling, etc. should be avoided. Other things to avoid are yard work such as raking, digging, lifting heavy objects such as groceries, pets and children, and any other activities that could aggravate or re-injure your condition.
- Unless indicated by the chiropractor, you may return to work/school after your appointment.
- If a sudden movement causes sharp or severe pain, or if you experience swelling, contact the our Orem, Utah chiropractic center at 801-709-9797.
How did chiropractic start? – ”Deaf Man Receives Hearing After Chiropractic Adjustment”
In 1895 Harvey Lillard, who had been deaf for 17 years, received the first chiropractic adjustment from Dr. D.D. Palmer (the founder of chiropractic). Three days later his hearing returned. How was this possible? The brain communicates with and coordinates the function of every system, organ, tissue, and cell in the body. When structural problems cause communication breakdowns between the brain and the rest of the body, proper function becomes impaired, and dis-ease results. The most common place for this to occur is in the spinal column. This is what Dr. Palmer corrected in Harvey. Chiropractors are masters trained at removing these structural imbalances (via chiropractic adjustments, etc ) releasing the full healing potential of the body through the nervous system. The ability to prevent disease through optimum function is why many people receive periodic chiropractic care without having any symptoms.
